video projection, dark brown painted walls, brown carpet, bench
6:10 min. loop
The work Censored Rooms deals with sexuality and how it influences situations in which men and woman approach each other. It also resulted out of reflection about the fact that despite the reality of AIDS, sexuality continues to play a large role in interactions between people.
To generate material for the work, the artist put herself in the situation of meeting men in front of camera and attempting to experience intimacy with them.
Despite the artificial frame, real experiences evolved, touching upon topics such as sexual attraction, expectations, mechanisms of emotional protection, social taboos, etc.
Furthermore, the image of the same woman repeatedly meeting different men provokes thought about the way women and their sexuality are judged in society.
The video is projected onto one wall of a carpeted space, in which the walls are painted dark brown, with a bench inviting the viewer to sit and watch. This makes him a voyeur, not only of the actions of the people on the screen, but also of his own reflections and emotions while watching. The title Censored Rooms is a hint at what is not being shown on the screen within the actual space. But it also points to the body having the ability to withhold information and hide secrets.
