Song conjures up images of a joyous thing, lilting, sweet and reliable to the ear.
Contrarily, devastation resounds somberly with severe destruction and overwhelming loss.
The performer enters a circle of chairs and lies on her back on the floor. A look of expectation emerges on her features and quickly evolves into an expression of premonition. As the inner reflections grow to dictate movements, her body begins to shiver, fueled by tension from the periphery, where bodies maintain watchful presence.
Moving with the flood and ebb of intuition, she heaves energy and vocal sound into the space and then allows it to flow back. Quietness is held quivering just before the face. Silence is endured out of which it might be possible to create a true moment. The viewer strains to be attentive to the smallest breathing noises.
The back is seen to pulsate, the hands twitching almost mechanically. Vibrations expand and stream out in a succession of barks, coughs and resonating screams. The simultaneously fragile and robust figure is propelled from a creeping, almost self-sacrificial crouch into an upright position. In a most intense moment of unexplained action something dauntingly unintelligible is pronounced, ringing out like an evocation.
Visualized, vocalized and wrought in gestures, it is the passing of a violent, unexpected upheaval; the rearing of a catastrophe, of which it’s disastrous effects compel immediate attention and compassionate reaction. Therein lies the song.
